Texas opened Education Freedom Accounts in 2026. Houston families were the first to take them up. Houston ISD led the state in funded students, and Houston-area districts together had more than 19,800 by late July. But TEFA is new, it ran out of money in its first year, and most families still don't know how it works with school aid, Catholic tuition assistance, pre-K, the 2027 federal credit or our partner fund. We explain all of it.
A School Funding Advisor looks at each family's situation, puts together a funding plan, and connects the family with schools that take that funding. A private partner focused on expanding church-run and community schools supports our work. We disclose that relationship wherever it applies, and it never changes which sources we recommend.
Where the school data comes from
TEFA participation. We pulled the Texas Comptroller's TEFA participating-school finder (finder.educationfreedom.texas.gov, administered by Odyssey) on October 9, 2026. We list every school and pre-K provider it shows in Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria, Galveston, Liberty, Waller, Chambers and Austin counties, along with the features, discounts and descriptions each school reported. Participation means the school is accredited by a TEPSAC-recognized organization or TEA, has operated at least two years, and tests students annually.
Federal school records. We added the U.S. Department of Education's Private School Survey public-use files: the 2023-24 survey, plus 2021-22 for schools that didn't respond in 2023-24. These give each school's enrollment, teachers, religious orientation, coeducational status and association memberships. They also catch established schools that are not in TEFA yet. 165 of our K-12 schools appear in both sources, and 125 appear only in the federal survey.
Funding figures. The 2026-27 award amounts, payment schedule, tuition and fee rules, credential policy and pre-K criteria come from educationfreedom.texas.gov. Funded-student counts come from the TEFA Annual Demographic Report (data as of July 29, 2026). IEP amounts come from the Comptroller's 2026-27 Special Education Funding Table. Neither source reports tuition. Schools can add it by claiming their listing.
Texas has no state registry of private schools. A school that is in neither source may be missing here. Tell us, and we'll verify it and add it.
Houston Edu Funding is a project of Boss Leads. We are not a school, the Texas Comptroller, Odyssey, or a government agency.
