Special education private schools in Houston — and the TEFA funding that pays for them

Houston has specialized schools for dyslexia, autism and learning differences, plus approved therapists and tutors. A TEFA student with an IEP can receive up to $30,000.

How the IEP amount is set

It is $10,474 plus what your district of residence would receive for the instructional setting code on the IEP. In Houston ISD that means about $15,700-16,800 for most settings and up to about $25,600 for residential-facility codes.

Finding a school

Our Special Education section lists schools that report special education services, dyslexia programs, speech or occupational therapy in the state finder, plus specialized schools from the federal survey.

Therapies on the marketplace

Speech, occupational, physical and behavioral therapy are eligible when not covered by Medicaid, other government benefits or private insurance. We list the approved Houston therapists by specialty.

No IEP yet?

Without a current IEP on file with TEA, the award is the standard $10,474. Ask your district for an evaluation well before the next application window.
