Homeschool and hybrid funding in Greater Houston

Texas homeschools are private schools under state law. TEFA adds $2,000 a year — and Houston has a fast-growing set of microschools and hybrid programs.

How the $2,000 works

Homeschool/other TEFA accounts are funded in full on July 1 and spent through the marketplace on curriculum, credentialed tutoring, online courses, therapies and testing.

Microschools

Prenda, Acton-model and independent microschools across Spring, Katy, Tomball and Humble appear in the state finder. If a microschool is a participating private school, its families receive $10,474, not $2,000.

Tutors must be credentialed

Under the Comptroller's July 2026 educator credential policy, the lead educator must hold a relevant license, permit, certification or accredited degree, or be a current or retired employee of an accredited school, and pass a fingerprint background check.

Students with an IEP

The IEP add-on applies only at a participating private school or pre-K/K program. A homeschooled student with an IEP receives the $2,000 amount.
